Description
This extremely fine retablo painting by Geronimo de Leon, “The Painter of Miracles” one of Mexico’s most important recognized retablo painters, represents La Madre Santisma de la Luz.
La Madre Santisma de la Luz or the Holy Mother of Light represents Mary rescuing a man from the jaws of a fiery dragon in lower left. In the right quadrant, Baby Jesus picks souls from a basket held by an angel.
An all around great folk retablo – layered with allegory and symbolism throughout.
Inscribed and dated January 26, 1901.
