Description
This late 18th / early 19th century Spanish colonial canvas painting represents Santa Gertrudis together with the Santo Nino de Jesus. ‘Saint Gertrude the Great’, theologian, mystic and German Benedictine, is one of the earliest devotees to the Sacred Heart of Jesus – hence the iconography in the painting offered here. She is perhaps best known for the sympathy she shows towards souls in purgatory — venerated, petitioned and invoked by loved ones for suffering purgatorial sinners.
