Description
This extremely fine and rare late 17th century Spanish colonial painting represents ‘Cristo de la Columna’ (Christ at the Column) with a Roman soldier, ominously poised, and ready to strike down the nearly lifeless body of Christ. In lower right, a small weeping angel pleads for his salvation. Although graphic, this image is skillfully rendered by the hand of a well trained colonial painter.
