Description
Not to be confused with ‘La Virgen Ampona’, nor ‘Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos’, this exceedingly rare 19th century Mexican folk retablo represents ‘Nuestra Señora de la Salud de Patzcuaro’. This subject is almost always misattributed, and only a handful of correctly attributed examples are known to exist, including the one offered here.
The inscription along lower edge offers clarity. The inscription: ‘un de exigo inde salus’, which translates loosely to: ‘if you seek you will receive health’.
