Description
This colorful 19th century folk retablo painting represents ‘La Purisima Concepcion’, or ‘The Purity of Mary’. ‘The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception’ as she is also known, represents Mary, born from her mother Anne, pure, and free from original sin.
In the retablo offered here, alight upon puffy clouds and a crescent moon, Mary is is encircled by stars and an aura of radiant light. The face of a brilliant orange sun is partially obscured by her veil a reference to “a woman clothed with the sun” from Revelation 12:12.
