Description
This colorful 19th century Mexican folk retablo represents ‘La Cruz de Animas’, or ‘The Cross of Souls’. The Cross of Souls represents the Crucifixion of Christ together with a dozen ‘Anima Sola’ (departed ancestral / lonesome souls), all clustered together, awaiting judgement and pleading for salvation in the fiery flames of purgatory. In this example, the painter made extra effort to convey their dissatisfaction each and every lonesome soul with a frown, crossed arms and furrowed brow.
